![]() About: Tal Kravitz is a musician and a singer educated at Israel’s finest music institutions. He is also a traveler who's embarked on a personal search for original tribal music in far corners of the world not yet exposed to Western civilization. Tal plays piano, harp, guitar, a variety of bagpipes, the musical saw, African percussion instruments and more. East Africa and Papua New Guinea are some of the places he's reached, photographing the indigenous tribes’ lifestyles and recording their music as it was sung and played for thousands of years. Tal uses this material to advocate for ethno-musicological research of societies whose traditions and music are in danger of extinction. The artist has rich experience providing music education to children and youth, including teaching children how to make and play original ethnic instruments. Israeli classics, Yiddish, Hassidic and Holiday songs are also a part of Tal’s repertoire. During his 11 years on the stage, Tal has given about 1,500 performances, lectures, and workshops. Highlights: “For years, I have been traveling to different places in the world in research of music. From every place I bring back songs, sounds, rare instruments and the people’s stories.”

POSTURA EXHIBIT OF ROMULO GALICANO AND PATIS TESORO
free
Visual Arts January 31, 2009 → Northwing Atrium, SM City Cebu.
![]() Select pieces from one of last year’s most successful and most talked-about art exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Postura: Portraits, Prestige, Posterity, travels to Cebu for a limited, ten day exhibition at the Northwing Atrium of SM City Cebu.
Postura presents a collection of formal portrait paintings by Romulo Galicano, together with Filipiniana couture and Ninay dolls of top designer Patis Tesoro.
While the earliest Philippine portraits were made in remembrance of those who had passed on, portraits now, with men and women in their best attire and poses, serve as powerful non-verbal communicators of present prestige, affluence, and stature.
Romulo “Mulong” Galicano, a son of Carcar, Cebu, is undoubtedly the most sought-after portraitist at present. Internationally recognized, his Portrait of Eddie Chua received the top honors in the prestigious 2005 Portrait Society of America Competition in Boston. His talent as a portraitist is seen in his ability to capture not only the likeness, but the soul and personality of his sitter. His paintings of the powerful and the influential, of industry captains, matriarchs, and young heirs ensure the preservation of their visage for posterity.
The name of Ma. Beatriz “Patis” Tesoro, on the other hand, is synonymous with Filipiniana wear. Indulging in the basic elements of the dress, particularly texture and embellishment, Patis has been refashioning Philippine attire, making them more than mere costumes of remembrances, but clothes to be remembered by.
Known also in the fashion circuit as a champion of the dying arts, crafts, and culture, among her significant crusade was the revival of the piña weaving industry in the Aklan provinces; the creation of a new, affordable fabric, piña seda, which is a weave of piña and silk; and through the Katutubong Filipino Foundation (KFF) which she co-founded with former First Lady Amelita Ramos, the improvement of the natural dye production in the country.
The Cebu Postura is scaled-down version of the large Manila show in June, but equally impresses with the choice works of Galicano and Patis re-presented for the Cebu audience. The show will be on view from January 31 until February 8.

![]()
Rudolf Golez, pianist extraordinaire returns for a Cebu concert in mid-January. He just arrived from a concert tour of the U.S East Coast. Rudolf is no stranger to Cebu , as he has done several concerts here every year for three years now. In 2008 however, he hasn’t performed and so an early 2009 engagement would be most anticipated especially after his successful debut at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Main Theater with Maestro Cristobal Halffter conducting the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.
Featured on the program will be Great Composers of the Romantic Period. In focus will be the German child genius Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, in celebration of his 200th birth anniversary. Rudolf will play the Songs Without Words and the Rondo Capriccioso of Mendelssohn. Also in the program will be the Andante Spianato and Grand Polonaise of F. Chopin, a particular favorite of the Pianist and his audiences in his recent U.S. Tour. There will be also some Liszt works to give a full account of the music of that most celebrated era of the Early Romantic Period. Incidentally, Mendelssohn, Chopin and Liszt were all born within a year apart, 1809,1810, and 1811 respectively. Concert date to be marked at your calendars and organizers is 23 January 2009, Friday at 8:00 pm, to be held at the Marcelo B. Fernan Cebu Press Center, Lahug Cebu City.
